Bio-Geochemical Processes: Insights from Fe-Mn Mineralization in the Aegean Sea (Greece)

چکیده

In this study, we have compiled new and existing mineralogical geochemical data on Fe-Mn mineralization from the Aegean region [Attica (Grammatiko, Legrena, Varnavas), Evia Milos islands], aiming to provide insights genesis of in that its potential environmental implications. A common feature those deposits is relatively low Cr, Co, V, Ni, Mo, Cd content, whereas Ba, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn show remarkably variable values. The Mn-Fe exhibit highest tungsten while a positive trend between MnO combined with negative Fe2O3 suggests preference W Mn-minerals. occurrence bacterio-morphic Fe-Mn-oxides/hydroxides within mineralizations studied region, indicates important role micro-organisms into redox reactions. Moreover, presence Fe-Mn-deposits, reflecting organic matter confirms shallow marine environment for their deposition. salient Varnavas ores sodium chloride coated fossilized micro-organisms, suggesting development solution containing high Na Cl concentrations. Furthermore, an point view, consideration given bioavailability elements such as related above-mentioned mineralizations. bio-accumulation factor (Wplant/Wsoil × 100) recorded Neogene sedimentary basins Attica, Grammatiko mineralization, reflects mobility under alkaline conditions impact similar elevated content.

Metazoan parasite species in cultured mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Thermaikos Gulf (North Aegean Sea, Greece).

This is the first study on parasites of cultured Mytilus galloprovincialis L. in Greek waters, and is based on samples collected every 2 to 3 mo between September 2000 and November 2001 at 3 stations in the Thermaikos Gulf. Each sample comprised 40 mussels. We found 4 metazoan parasite species: hydroid Eugymnanthea inquilina, gill turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae, trematode Proctoces maculatus an...

Turnover of passerine birds on islands in the Aegean Sea (Greece)

Methods The passerine birds of these islands were surveyed between 1954 and 1961 by G.E. Watson, and were resurveyed between 1988 and 1992. The effects of migratory status and body size on the probabilities of extinction and immigration were examined by G-tests of linear trend in proportion, and analysis of variance, respectively. A combined analysis of migratory status, body size and physical ...

Protozoan parasites in cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Thermaikos Gulf (north Aegean Sea, Greece).

The protozoans Ancistrum mytili (Oligohymenophorea: Ancistridae) and Marteilia refringens/maurini (Marteiliidea: Marteiliidae) were found parasitizing cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L. in the Thermaikos Gulf (north Aegean Sea, Greece). The former did not affect the condition index of infected mussels, in contrast to the latter, which did so and which also induced hemocyte infiltrati...

Long Term Flux of Saharan Dust to the Aegean Sea around the Attica Region, Greece

In this study, Particulate Matter (PM) samples, collected during 2 summer and 2 winter months over a long-term period (1984–2012) at a suburban site in Athens (Greece), were used in order to examine the connection between Sahara dust long range transport events and mass concentrations of the aerosol mineral component, as well as the relative abundance of specific crustal components. As a result...

Geochemical Processes Constraining Iron Uptake in Strategy II Fe Acquisition

Phytosiderophores (PS) are natural chelating agents, exuded by graminaceous plants (grasses) for the purpose of Fe acquisition (Strategy II). They can form soluble Fe complexes with soil-Fe that can be readily taken up. PS are exuded in a diurnal pulse release, and with the start of PS release a "window of iron uptake" opens. In the present study we examined how this window is constrained in ti...
